Chambery is located in the Rhone-Alpes region in the southeast part of France. It once served as the capital of Savoie. Because it is located in the heart of the French Alps, Chambery makes a great place to stay while visiting the Alps. In the winter, many visitors stay in Chambery and then drive to any of the various nearby ski resorts. Likewise in warmer months, visitors use Chambery as a starting point for hiking, biking or other sports. Students enrolled in French school in Chambery might be interested to learn that the Fontaine des Elephants is the most famous landmark in Chambery. The fountain was built in 1838 and has the head and forelimbs of four life size elephants built into the base of a tall column. The Chateau de Chambery is another interesting landmark. It was built in the 14th century and is still home to the county council in the region. At certain times of the year, visitors can get tours of this fascinating castle. Occasionally concerts are held there as well. Students taking French courses in Chambery may try to catch a performance at the Charles Dullin Theater known for producing traditional plays as well as occasional music events. When visitors are ready for some quiet time they likely head to the Clos Savoiroux Park. The park is a popular spot for walking, running, cycling or just relaxing. The lovely park is a welcome break from the more metropolitan areas of the city. Chambery has a lovely small town charm, with access to many big town activities.
