Angers is located in north western France and spans both banks of the Maine River. The city can trace its roots back to the Roman times and at one time served as the capital city of the province of Anjou. Currently, Angers is known as a city with a focus on higher education. It is the home to two renowned universities as well as several other more specialized learning institutions focusing on subjects like engineering, fine art, manufacturing, business and more. In fact its business school, ESSCA, is considered one of the best business schools in France. Students enrolled in French school in Angers will immediately notice the medieval chateau which rises up as a dominant figure in the city’s landscape. Inside, visitors will find one of the largest and most magnificent works of medieval tapestry in the world. The twin spires of the Cathedral of Saint Maurice are another distinctive site. The cathedral dates back to the 12th century as do some of the other interesting historical buildings. Students taking French courses in Angers will be thankful for the beauty displayed in the flowers and gardens along the river throughout Angers. Each springs up in sharp contrast to the dark, imposing stonework found in many of the structures. The parks are the perfect spot for relaxing or enjoying a picnic. Visitors also find friendly market gardens where patrons can purchase produce or freshly cut flowers. With access to fine libraries, historic sites, a thriving theater, interesting museums and more, Angers is a great destination city.
