The city of Los Altos Hills was incorporated in 1956. It is located in Northern California, thirty-five miles south of San Francisco. Ohlone Indians were the first inhabitants of the area that eventually became Los Altos Hills. The area has always been a very agricultural area with cattle ranches and first vineyards, then orchards. In the 1960s, many wealthy San Franciscans built summer homes in Los Altos Hills. The hilly terrain of the town offers residents views of the San Francisco Bay area. Because Los Altos Hills is zoned as strictly residential, the town has no commercial or industrial areas. Los Altos Hills shares a zip code with neighboring Los Altos, where visitors can head for shopping and dining opportunities. Also, with the proximity to San Francisco, visitors have even more options, with just a relatively short drive, to see a number of cultural attractions including theater, dance, music and museums. Los Altos Hills has an extensive series of pathways, allowing residents and visitors to get out and enjoy the beauty of the area. Students taking English courses in Los Altos Hills should also take time to explore the area around Stanford University. Just five miles away, Stanford University in Palo Alto, visitors can tour the campus, the Cantor Arts Center, the sports facilities and more. The climate in the area is Mediterranean with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Los Altos Hills is truly a picturesque setting in beautiful Santa Clara Country with much to offer its visitors.
