Course description

This is the standard and most popular course, available at all levels from beginner to advanced. Groups will be made up according to the results of the Level Tests done on the first day of classes. Two hours daily will be dedicated to grammar, in which you can expect a teacher-led explanation of an area of grammar, with spoken and written examples, exercises, and opportunities to practice and ask questions. The focus in these classes is on understanding and accuracy. Two hours daily will be dedicated to conversation, with a discussion appropriate to the level led by the teacher but taking into account the students' interests and views. The focus in these classes is on self-expression and fluency, although the teacher will correct errors or clarify grammar as appropriate.
What can I expect to learn?
The areas of grammar studied will depend on the length of your stay and on the previous knowledge of the students in the group, but here are some of the grammar topics you can expect to cover at each level:
Elementary: regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, the use of ser and estar, reflexive pronouns, the present continuous tense, comparatives and superlatives, forming questions.
Intermediate: regular and irregular verbs in the past tense, the perfect tenses, reflexive verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns, reported speech (statements), the use of por, para and other prepositions.
Advanced: contrasting the past tenses, the present and past subjunctive, the future tense to express possibility, the conditional tense, and reported speech (requests and commands).

"Very warm staff and qualified teachers."

Renan Dias, student from Brazil

I have taken a one week "Business Spanish" course. All the staff were very warm and welcoming. The teachers were very attentive and qualified. The school is a bit distant from the center area of Punta del Este, but very easy to find, riding by the cost. Honestly, I wish the content of the course were more focused on business itself, but once I asked this to Margot (the owner), the last class was totally focused on it. I would recommend the course for foreigners who want to learn Spanish in an immersion environment.

Annie Ouellet, student from USA

Professor Mathias was excellent, very attentive with good pedagogy. He knew how to adapt the course to our needs. The director Margo was excellent too, she planned a good schedule for us. We are very satisfied!
Thank you

"It was a very pleasant experience and I have enjoyed it a lot"

Luciane Botelho, student from Brazil

I had a very pleasant experience at La Herradura Punta del Este. Both teachers I had classes with are very friendly and know how to teach.
The school's location is pretty good, although the facilities are not good at all. The school building is old, dirty, damp and very dark. For the price the course is charged, I do think it should have better facilities and better resources.

"Welcoming, informative: I'd recommend to anyone who wants to share the same experience."

MATTHEW RICE, student from USA

My advisers (Margo, for example) were very helpful in helping me fly, sail, bus, from Seattle to Punta del Este (given the COVID testing requirements for entering Uruguay). They made sure I was on track in getting the necessary testing, and that I made it to the language school safely. We used WhatsApp to communicate back and forth.

At the language school there are friendly people (students, and my teacher, Matias). We as a group got acquainted with one another at one of Punta del Este's bars.

This is the first time that I've visited South America, and it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life as a language student. Spanish is the second foreign language that I've studied since high school, in addition to Dutch. Matias is very attentive and has been reliable in handing out homework assignments and documents. I've learned a great deal about Uruguay and the areas surrounding Punta del Este (which I hope to explore someday).

"Great language school and lovely teacher for my three children"

Vivienne Ford, student from USA

I booked a one week Spanish course for my three children (aged 6-12 yrs) which consisted of 2 hours of morning teaching a day. We had a lovely teacher, Susanna, who instantly put the children at ease and was fun and engaging. It can sometimes be hard dealing with children with a range of ages but Susanna devised stories and ways to practice Spanish that bridged the age gap. The children loved her and by the end of the week their Spanish had improved.

I dealt with the School's director, Margo, who put together the course for the children. They were no longer running the course on their website but she worked with us to come up with teaching suitable for the children that focused on conversational Spanish rather than grammar.

Margo, was great at keeping in contact throughout the process. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we were unable to use the school setting so Susanna came to our apartment which worked very well.

All in all it was a very pleasant experience and the children learnt a lot.

It is worth noting when booking that the school is located Maldonado which is about a 40-60 minute walk from the centre of Punta del Este. We stayed in an apartment 5 mins away from the school and there are lots of other great places to stay nearby and on the beach front.
