Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city in Cuba. Founded by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar in 1514, Santiago de Cuba is set along a large bay and rests at the base of the Sierra Maestra mountains. Students taking Spanish courses in Santiago de Cuba will truly enjoy exploring this exotic city. With a colorful past, and a colorful combination of people, this city is lively and beautiful. It was from here that Fidel Castro launched his revolution, and from this city where virtually every type of Cuban music originated. Students attending Spanish school in Santiago de Cuba will want to take the time to explore the Casco Historico district which includes a number of churches, museums and government buildings. Visitors can see the old house of Fidel Castro, the original Bacardi Rum factory, or visit Barrio El Tivoli, a charming neighborhood characterized by its steep steps. Follow the steps to the Museum of the Underground Struggle, and stop to observe any of the checkers and dominoes games taking place along the steps. The Castillo El Morro is another interesting destination, particularly at sunset when the fortress built in 1638 holds its daily ceremony celebrating the importance of the fortress. The climate in Santiago de Cuba is tropically hot and humid all year. The city is lively and energetic, offering great music, food, shopping and people. With both cultural and historical museums to peruse, a thriving theatre, ballet and opera scene, and many outdoor activities as well, visitors will never be at a loss for a new adventure.
